Chapter Ten
“Bloody hell, what does she mean by that? One condition?” Hunter raked his hands
through his hair and watched Allura’s retreating backside. He heard the girls’ happy laughter and
constant chatter. He felt like a fish out of water. Except to bed women, he’d never been around
them. Now he was surrounded by them.
On one condition? She’ll marry me on one condition?
Blade stood beside him, his hands on his hips, his mouth gaping open, then he grinned
broadly.
“I wouldn’t venture a guess,” he said through the laughter. “Do you know what that one
condition is? I think you are in deep trouble, my friend.”
“I don’t even want to think. But I’m sure the condition most assuredly has something to
do with the island. I won’t bargain.” He was adamant and stubborn on this issue—unmovable. He
would not allow his wife to foolishly jeopardize what he’d worked so hard to gain. He wanted
children and a faithful wife. He would not allow her to cheat on him with something so
inconsequential as an island.
“For the sake of argument, perhaps you should not be quite so pig-headed,” Blade grunted
as he strained against the weight of the boat.
“I am never pig-headed.”
“Of course you are. That is one of your most endearing qualities. Should I tell you some
of the others? Or would it go to your head?”
Hunter let out a snort before he pulled the boat higher. Together they secured the vessel in
a cave nearby. “They will most likely find this,” Hunter said, gazing at the island. “And then one
of us will have to run after them.”
Blade paused, seeming to let Hunter’s words register in his head. “I’m sure the little spitfire
knows where every cave in these parts is located. I will turn her over my knee if she runs off to
the island and I have to go after her again.”
“Then we will have to double our vigil. It’s not wise for them to go there alone.” Hunter
felt the pull of the island. Even now, he wanted to go back and explore the parts that Allura had
not shown him. He’d felt relaxed there, almost as if he had no cares. Yet he was about to embark
on the biggest challenge in his life. He was going to wed in a few day’s time, and in time he would
rule this land. He’d wanted this more than anything.
“You could always go with them,” Blade said with a shrug and a half-laugh. “I suppose
I’d have to go too. It is rather idyllic there.” Then he paused, raking both hands through his hair,
a look of pain chiseled on his face. “As long as the little spitfire stays home.”
“The island is beautiful. The spring is clear and cold. I’d like to spend more time there with
Allura. Alone. Do you think that would satisfy her? The two of us there together.”
“If you kept her mind on things other than her freedom, your ploy might work. Hunter, for
God’s sake, just keep her in bed. Get her with child and keep her that way, and then she will not
have time to venture to the island alone.
